Exam 70-284
Expansion ServersMail that is sent to a mail-enabled group cannot be directly delivered to the members of that group - the message must be expanded. Expansion of mail occurs by default on the first Exchange server that handles the message; however, this might not be a desirable option if the server is already taxed or otherwise low on resources. The Expansion servers role can be give to an Exchange server that has no mailboxes - a Public Folder or Bridgehead server for example. By doing so, you alleviate the loading on other Exchange server and your users do not experience a slowdown in mailbox access due to the expansion of a large mail-enabled group. The drawback is that the expansion server becomes a single point of failure (SPOF). If the expansion server is unavailable, the message is not expanded and no members of the group will receive messages. Conversely, if an Exchange server fails, some members will still get messages. return to Home
